Treatment for Pleural Mesothelioma

Surgery- Different types of surgeries that can be offered for patients diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma.

    1. Pleurectomy/decortication- This involves the removal of a part of the pleura in an attempt to remove the tumor.
    1. Extrapleural pneumonectomy- This surgery involves the removal of the pleura, diaphragm, pericardium, and the whole lung on the side of the tumor.

Both pleurectomy and extrapleural pneumonectomy may be referred to generally as a thoracotomy because they involve the opening up of the chest cavity to get at the cancer.

Chemotherapy: In a procedure called intra-pleural chemotherapy, cancer fighting drugs may be administered directly into the chest.
